I have given this city (Albuquerque) as much time as I can. I cannot get a job. I am nearly broke and have decided to cut my losses and move back to the east coast. I will be in Easton PA for a while working on racecars, and I don't know who I made so angry as to have my life transformed into this.

The thing about living in the southwest is that even though I keep my apartment OCD-level clean (vacuumed daily, surfaces disinfected twice daily, dishes washed immediately, produce in the disposal rather than the bin, garbage taken out daily anyway), and even though I live in a nice, clean complex that is well maintained, and even though the exterminator comes at least monthly, I have roaches. Not big roaches, but roaches nonetheless. I try to make myself feel better by telling myself "You know, you only found and killed one today, and it was really small," but roaches are kind of a binary state of existance. Like gun shot wounds.

I've been enjoying Netfilx Watch At Home, particularly the documentaries. I've not got the time for proper reviews, but documentarys I've enjoyed lately include the following:

I don't adore musicals. I don't like musicals. I do love The HMS Pinafore and La Cage aux Folles. And that is all. OK West Side Story kind of.

So I'm packing up to go back back back to Albuquerque. Not much to pack really. Had a normal night, played I Love Lucy themed Monopoly with my family. It reminded me of what's really heartbreaking about my new place and circle. In Glasgow, I could ring people up and invite them round for board games. Not in a kitschy way, just because everyone knows that they're fun. Here, when you're at people's houses, it's because the bars are about to close and someone has drugs. I kinda like drugs. Not to take but to be around. Maybe it makes me feel Rock and Roll. But here there are no quiet nights of board games and good wine.

Gosh, I've just been sounding so so so naff. It's not so bad. There are things that I love. There are people I love. It's just cold and there's not enough booze.

I guess the thing is that my life has become ordinary. My friends were rock stars. My friends were ministers and professors and dancers and DJs and crazies and freaks of all kinds. I was a stranger in a delightfully strange land. I belonged because NONE of us belonged.

Now my life is ordinary. My friends are hairdressers and bar tenders and waiters and they have no higher aspirations. This doesn't make them bad people, it doesn't make them bad friends. It just means that even though I'm in a new city, every day is not an adventure. I walk around, I hand in job applications, I go to the two restaurants I like, I go to the two bars that I like. I go to the movies alone. OK, I've always done that. I don't hate what things have ended up as, I am just not excited by it.

Everything is changed and nothing can ever be quite the same again. I'm writing in Magdalena, New Mexico, visiting my Mother and Sister, anticipating my return to my new home in Albuquerque. I have friends there, which happened really pleasantly and quickly. I've been mostly behaving myself, save a little drunken fooling around on couches, light merriment, etc. Job searching is heart breaking and being broke, broke, broke is quite worse.

To clear my head, a list of films I've seen recently.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The mixed reviews had made me a bit nervous, but I really loved this film. The best actress nod is a lock, and Pitt was quite good as well. This is the definition of a mature film; Fincher the auteur no longer feels the need to prove himself, and along with Zodiac, Button has firmed up his position as a modern great. Panic Room had me nervous, with its reliance on Fincher's proclivity for ultramodern cinematography over story and character, but those fears have been utterly banished.

Milk

This is not my favorite Gus van Sant film of 2008, but it's pretty fantastic. I had feared that this would operate in the same universe as van Sant's other more overtly commercial work (Good Will Hunting, Finding Forrester), and to a degree it does. What this film has going for it is a clear vision, SPECTACULAR acting (Emile Hersh, James Franco, I'm looking at you), and a good, if not great script. This is obviously a passion project, and it's kind of magical to see that seep into the frame, but it's just very good, it doesn't transcend.

Valkyrie

This is not as poor as it could have been. It's also not very good. I think Cruise is always strong, as he is here, but I yearn for Cruise the character actor (Magnolia, Born on the Fourth, kind of Collateral). Instead we have Cruise the leading man, more in a The Last Samurai way than anything else. Bryan Singer is despeartely overrated, and this film really could have been put together by any competant footage compiler, but the film isn't awful. I think the adjective I'm most inclined to use is slight.

OK Lightning Round

Flashbacks of a Fool

This was pretty wonderful, with the half-hour bookends staring Daniel Craig far outshining the interior love letter to Bryan Ferry and teenaged Britain.

Mongol

I'll follow Tadanobu Asano (Vital, Gohatto, Last Life in the Universe) to the ends of the earth, but this was fairly poor. Please, please please go watch Last Life in the Universe instead.

Sukiyaki Western Django

This was a borderline unwatchable, poorly executed disaster. Still trying to wash this out of my mouth.

Zach and Miri Make a Porno

I kind of love this film.

The most idiotic fun I've had laughing at the screen in ages. Vampire baseball. I love it.

So I finally saw Charlie Bartlett, and now I will tell you why it was phenomenal.

First, this film is made for me. Surprise, surprise, I enjoy films about precocious youths that match their charm only with their abnormality. I can't imagine why. The lead actor is just great, and you can actually believe him as a high schooler, which is a rare occurrence in these films, and a welcome treat. Sure, he's cool; but he's not really that much cooler than the coolest kid you knew growing up. You maybe admired him when you were a freshman and he was a senior, and you maybe weren't sure why. I'm not saying that there aren't moments that require suspension of disbelief, in fact there are many, but none of them were really plot-killers for me. I admit that I showed up to love this film, but I didn't plan to love it this much.

Second, Robert Downey Jr. I think that there's a case to be made that he is the finest actor of his generation. He has this way of being magnetic and scenery chewing without being emotionally dishonest or unbelievable. He's fantastic at walking up to the line and smiling across it without quite stepping over it.

Third, the direction. This film has gotten a lot of "Rushmore it ain't" criticism. Of course it has. The thing is, and this is a lesser film than that masterpiece, Charlie Bartlett doesn't aim for the same level of idiosyncratic delirium that Wes Anderson has made his hallmark. This feels like a back-handed compliment, but I think that this particular film benefits from not being directed by an auteur. That isn't to say that John Poll is strictly a workman class director, and he's not made enough for me to feel like I really have his voice, but he doesn't let himself and his station get bigger than the story or the actors. There's a temptation to take scripts like this and quirk the films sensibilities to the point of absurdity, but again, if you're not Wes Anderson, that tends to be an easy way to get yourself into trouble. Charlie Bartlett has just enough of a visual language to make it feel unique without making it twee, which again, is the temptation.

Fourth, the script. I'm not going to pretend that the script is perfect and new and completely original, because it's not, but I am very excited by Gustin Nash, who's absurdly young and already understands that the most powerful way to get the point across is to subvert some tropes and adhere to others, providing a familiar framework without the feeling that you're re-watching a film you've seen many, many times before. I think Youth in Revolt is going to be epic.

So I watched a film just now called Totally Fucked Up by Gregg Araki. It's one of those New Queer Cinema films from the early nineties, I think 1993. This is to say, the acting is not great, the film was made for nothing and looks like it was made for less than nothing, and it's got an ending that, to me, screams "I don't know how to stop this, so I guess I'll do this now." Whatever. I love this film. I love love love love love this film. Here's the thing: This is one of the first times I've seen a queer film where the teenagers in it act like normal teenagers. The drama of dealing with monogamy, relationships with parents, apathy, violence, is fairly universal. The circumstances are different when you're gay, y'know, slightly, but I guess it's pretty fucked up either way. Every other gay movie ever deals with child abuse/ sexual abuse, and AIDS. A couple of those movies are pretty good, but jesus, there's more to being gay than getting touched as a kid and dying. Seriouly. Whatever, my thoughts are scattered, but this film wins.

I'm sick of not feeling like an adult, because pretty clearly everything that I deal with in my life is pretty much not kid stuff. I'm sick of feeling angsty at all because that really is kid stuff, and I had rather hoped by now it would have passed. Maybe it doesn't? I don't know. It had better.

I miss James pretty terribly, which is odd given how long we've been able to keep apart in the past. I like my new sort-of friends Monica and Johnny. They're really sweet and were clearly the best part of an already pretty great wedding.

I think that lilies are terribly brutish and indelicate and someone should give them a talking to.

I think maybe I'll just go wallow in my own ridiculous brain until I get it together enough to say ENOUGH! Were that it would be soon let's pray.

All Star Superman 11 was fucking amazing. Next issue is the last and my heart is broken for this. Craig, you will dig this. It's epic in all the right ways.

Crecy is brutal and funny as all get-out.

The X-men omnibus is pretty amazing and is 900 pages.

Starman Omnibus is yet to be read.

Final Crisis saw the Martian Manhunter die and that was really terrible. This is less than a year after the New Frontier made me fall in love with him.

Seven Soldiers book 2 will, I suspect, be more of the same.

Casanova book 1 big big hardcover makes me wish I was on issues for the backmatter but this is a gorgeous production. Loving the oversize. Fraction will not be defeated.

Oh my GAWD.

I watched Forrest Gump which I hate hate hated. Then I watched the Oh in Ohio which I love love love love love love loved. Now right now I'm watching Junebug which I am loving hating loving. How did I not know about this one? It's squirmy in just the right places. Ryan Atwood with a dirt 'stash. Ok Ok maybe a little too squirmy. Why do all indie films feature unlikable or at least un-relatable people? I kinda want to punch them all. Or most of them.

Cats are taking little naps. I should too and also fuck this movie/ I love this movie. I cannot make up my mind. There is perhaps a deficit of Parker Posey. I want a film in which Parker Posey plays all of the roles. Maybe that would be un-watchable. I don't know.

I keep accidentally making noises when I am almost asleep that are loud enough to wake me back up. It makes me crazy and I thought I had left it behind. years ago. I took a break for three hours to take a walk with pretty boy James Crisp. At first he made me feel good because he told me I looked really hot. Hours later he told me that I was smarter when he first met me. It was a wash I guess. We did some good Glasgow exploration anyway.

New tattoo design almost done.

I started Project Runway with Season 4, and now, going back to Season 2, HOLY FUCK ARE THESE PEOPLE UNTALENTED. It's amazing to see a show work in such stark opposition to the traditional television truism of diminishing returns. I spent the afternoon doing clerical work for my friend David whilst watching, and it was kind of perfect. The juxtaposition of the lala drama and excel spreadsheets was delightful and I recommend it fully.

I will now go and paint four bathrooms. How did this life happen to me?

I taught sunday school today! Fun! We coloured in dolphins and butterflies and starfish and birds and all sorts of things for Genesis 1. How fucking crazy is my job? We had glitter paint! Last night I had many beers and watched Teeth and discovered twitter and lastfm did several things I now regret heavily. Oh well.
